About this Recording
Sunrise – Music for Mornings is an original electronic instrumental by Australian composer Justin James.
 
Inspired by Justin's first visit to Los Angeles and the atmospheric sounds of radio stations such as The Wave and The Quiet Storm, the piece combines warm electric piano timbres, gentle synthesizer textures and subtle electronic percussion to create a calm and uplifting soundscape.
 
Minimal in its arrangement and rich in atmosphere, Sunrise sits somewhere between ambient, new age and smooth jazz. Rather than demanding attention, it creates space for reflection, creativity and quiet listening.
 
Originally composed using a Roland D-70 synthesizer and Roland R-8 drum machine, the recording remained archived on D.A.T. for many years before finally being released.
 
Whether played through headphones, during a morning routine or as background music for creative work, Sunrise offers a peaceful beginning to the day.
 
A Note from Justin
Sunrise is one of two companion pieces I wrote after returning from my first visit to Los Angeles.
 
Radio stations such as The Wave and The Quiet Storm introduced me to a style of music that was spacious, understated and deeply relaxing. I found myself listening for hours, fascinated by how much atmosphere could be created with so little.
 
When I returned home, I sat at my Roland D-70 and began writing two simple electric piano pieces that would become Sunrise and Sunset. They were conceived as musical bookends to the day - one welcoming the morning, the other gently closing it.
 
The arrangements are intentionally minimal, with light percussion from a Roland R-8 drum machine supporting the piano rather than dominating it. Both recordings were archived on D.A.T. for many years before finally being revisited.
 
They are best experienced through headphones.
