A Note from Justin:
The Interview began as a late-night jam while I was working at Jingles Australia. The studio felt utopian to me at the time - a Fairlight computer for sampling, a Yamaha grand, and the freedom to experiment once everyone had gone home. I would explore unusual sounds, long-tailed samples, and off-centre rhythmic ideas, often building textures that drifted briefly away from tonality before returning to balance.
This piece started with a restless bass line and a loose rhythmic idea that gradually found focus. As the groove settled, I began imagining an edgy job interview - charged with tension, confidence, and subtle seduction. The music came together quickly, almost as a snapshot of that imagined interaction.
The Interview reflects a pre-pandemic workplace - physical presence, expectation, and the unspoken dynamics between people. It explores what isn’t said as much as what is, drifting through familiar clichés while hinting at something more ambiguous beneath the surface.
