About this Composition
Rain for You piano and vocal sheet music by Justin James and lyricist Chris Fraser Brown is a reflective contemporary ballad exploring emotional distance, unresolved conflict and the quiet collapse of a relationship.
Written between 1988 and 1990 and further developed during the early 1990s, the song combines flowing piano accompaniment with expressive melodic writing and atmospheric lyrical imagery. Weather becomes both metaphor and emotional landscape, reflecting tension, regret and emotional exhaustion.
The music balances warmth and melancholy through steady rhythmic movement, suspended harmonies and lyrical vocal phrasing. The recurring image of rain suggests emotional release, unresolved longing and the lingering aftermath of conflict.
Originally developed while Justin James was pursuing songwriting, recording and arranging opportunities in Los Angeles, the track was recorded with Justin performing lead and backing vocals alongside guitarist Kilian Albrecht. The result captures the rawness and sincerity of youthful songwriting while maintaining a timeless emotional atmosphere.
The included MP3 reference recording features the vocal melody performed on piano to support learning phrasing, pitch and entries.
A Note from Justin
Rain for You was written between 1988 and 1990, with further collaboration and refinement taking place during the early 1990s.
At the time, I had been spending several years in Los Angeles working with songwriting, performing, arranging and recording opportunities, and I needed material to shop around. We were short on vocalists, so I ended up singing lead vocals and backing vocals for the recording myself, with Kilian Albrecht contributing rhythm and lead guitar.
Looking back, the recording still feels slightly undercooked β but honestly, that rawness suits the song.
This is a song for the rainy day we hope never arrives. The emotional aftermath after conflict, frustration and emotional storms have already passed through.
Itβs about relationships reaching the point where communication breaks down and little things become magnified beyond proportion. The point where people cross emotional territory they probably should avoid.
Using weather as metaphor might feel tied to another musical era, but Iβve always been endlessly romantic. Some things disappear and eventually return again.
