About this Arrangement:

The works of Rachmaninoff are cherished, revered and hold a special place in my heart. I have played all four piano concerti, both sets of variations, all three Sonatas (one being cello and piano), and if I go on, we’d run out of room. Let’s just say I’ve played just about every note he has written for the piano. For chamber musicians, quality music is essential. There are some very average arrangements on offer, the more recent the music composed, so I set about arranging all the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerti slow movements for Cello and Piano. I feel that Rachmaninoff has an affinity for the Cello and the Baritone section of the human voice and the orchestra. The Largo Second Movement of his fourth piano concerto is in the style of a theme and variations and is understated, however, quite amusing in places. It is side-eyed and casually conversational between the piano soloist and orchestra or in this case, the Cello. It ends with a section he took from his Etude Tableux to complete the movement. Not the first time Rachmaninoff borrowed from his own solo material. He did the same to write his famous second concerto.
