About this Track
Paralysed by Justin James and Chris Fraser Brown is a dark and atmospheric contemporary song exploring fear, vulnerability and the unsettling sensation of being trapped within the subconscious mind.
Written between 1989 and 1992, the piece developed from an earlier instrumental built around a mid-tempo 4/4 bass line and extended harmonic structures using stacked chord tones and spacious synthesizer textures. Inspired by the sonic palette of late-80s and early-90s contemporary production, the track blends ambient keyboard layers, delayed textures and reflective melodic writing to create a cinematic and dreamlike atmosphere.
The song explores the emotional experience of paralysis within a nightmare - a terrifying state where the mind feels trapped between fear and helplessness. Throughout the track, tension builds gradually through layered harmonic movement and spacious production while the emotional narrative searches for safety and escape from darker subconscious spaces.
Originally recorded using a modified Roland D70 sound palette and delayed plucked synthesizer textures, Paralysed carries a distinctly atmospheric and nostalgic sonic identity while remaining emotionally timeless in its themes of fear, uncertainty and inner struggle.
A Note from Justin
Paralysed was written between 1989 and 1992.
The first recording came after I had written a piece using a 4/4-style bass line, mid-tempo feel and stacked 9ths, 13ths, 15ths and 17ths using a modified Roland D70 tone palette.
It was originally called SpaceDream — I think.
I used a simulated guitar “pluck” sound from the Roland Rompler with two delays added to create a trickle-back effect that contributed to the spacious atmosphere of the piece.
As we were light on vocalists at the time, it was my turn to sing it, with my co-author handling backing vocals.
Listening back now makes me laugh, though the laughter sits somewhere between cringe and shame. I’d probably protect people before exposing them to my feeble attempt at singing the song.
Still, the framework and atmosphere shone through.
Paralysed is about being trapped in a dream that feels frighteningly real and not being able to do anything about it.
It’s about the frantic attempt to climb out of that place - to seek safety amidst the horror of those darker subconscious spaces in the mind.
