This piece begins with a quotation from Chopin’s Funeral March (third movement from his Second Piano Sonata).
It is a short-form, programmatic work. The title One After Another reflects a situation we all face - too many expanding issues to deal with at once.
The piece explores inner restlessness, emptiness and mourning, with a sense of resignation. The bass moves away from a traditional march feel, but retains enough of it to suggest the underlying weight and gravitas.
The right hand develops motifs that express a desire to transcend the pain - to escape, to move beyond.
It ends quietly, almost in a whimper, as everyday reality takes shape again.
