Micro Profound HappySad piano and string ensemble sheet music by Justin James is a contemporary tone poem that explores the subtle emotional territory that exists between happiness and sadness.
Adapted from Justin's earlier educational piano work Count Restula, this chamber arrangement transforms a simple musical idea into a lyrical and expressive work for piano and strings. While the original piece was designed to assist students with counting, phrase breaks and musical rests, the composer later rediscovered the music and found an unexpected emotional depth hidden within its simplicity.
The work celebrates life's ordinary yet extraordinary moments — a smile, a glance, a brief connection, a ray of sunshine through the clouds or a moment of stillness amidst a busy day. Rather than focusing on grand events, the music reflects the small experiences that quietly shape our lives and often remain with us long after they have passed.
Throughout the piece, the piano and string ensemble engage in a warm and intimate conversation. The strings provide colour, atmosphere and emotional depth while the piano offers lyrical themes and gentle reflection. The resulting sound world is understated, vulnerable and deeply human.

A little connection, warmth, smile, glance, moment of clarity, somewhere between happy and sad.
A little ray of sunshine through the clouds.
A sense of hope amidst tragedy.
A moment between the stressor of a busy day to just be.
Life's most precious connections sometimes happen unexpectedly and are not what we often plan for.
This composition is adapted from a short educationally based piece I wrote called Count Restula. A piece designed to assist with taking rests, phrase breaks and counting. Loosely titled after the Sesame Street character for a bit of fun.
The piece was pretty well banged out and I thought nothing of it until I revisited the piano and it struck me as quite understated and beautiful, like a lot of those moments.
It is a piece which connects happy and sad and binds them.
It is quite a melancholy work.
Very understated and heartfelt, with vulnerability and tenderness at its core.
