A gentle contemporary vocal piece inspired by watching a child learning to stand, capturing patience, balance, and quiet determination.
Description:
Learning How to Stand is a gentle contemporary vocal piece by Justin James, inspired by watching his granddaughter learning to stand.
The song unfolds with warmth and patience, capturing the delicate balance between fragility and determination. Soft textures support a reflective vocal line, creating a tender and intimate atmosphere.
Rather than dramatic development, the piece focuses on small moments — growth, care, and quiet perseverance. The result is a heartfelt, narrative-driven song suitable for reflective listening and emotional storytelling.
A Note from Justin:
My partner is now a grandmother, and the past six months have been a time of excitement and transition. With my own children grown, I found myself reflecting on life returning to a simple template through the eyes of a child - learning to stand, walk, and speak for the first time. It’s a beautiful stage of life, provided the child is supported, and one that deserves to be cherished.
The song came to me on a quiet Saturday morning in about thirty minutes. Watching those first attempts to stand reminded me that we’re all prone to becoming stuck at times. Returning to something fundamental - balance, patience, and persistence - can help us reconnect with ourselves and appreciate what we already have.
The stop–start gestures mirror the tentative process of learning to stand. The pauses allow space for the mind to catch up to the present moment, while the gentle push and pull reflects a life slowly finding its balance.
