About this Arrangement:
It’s hard to hide from the Grieg Piano Concerto in A minor. The work was written by a 24-year-old Grieg, clearly pining and in love, with no objectivity or prefrontal cortex to speak of. It is one of the most popular and performed concertos of the Romantic era. In fact, I’m currently taking out a restraining order against it. The work has a richness of melodic and harmonic texture and a hint of Norwegian folk music. The premiere of the concerto took place in 1869, with Grieg himself as the intended soloist, but due to other orchestral commitments, was unable to attend. “Sorry, yeah, written a Piano Concerto, but I’m getting Uber Eats tonight and hooking up, so I can’t. Love to, but you enjoy it for me, ok?” This concerto was the first ever recorded, back in 1909. Due to technological restrictions, only six minutes of an abridged version were captured - a Grieg bootleg. Grieg only revised it over 300 times. Here, we capture a reflective interlude in the third movement, opening with a beautiful flute melody before transferring to the piano soloist.
