About this Composition
Dudley piano sheet music by Justin James is an original contemporary piano solo inspired by the life, artistry and enduring legacy of Dudley Moore.
Known worldwide as a comedian, actor, satirist and film star, Moore was also a remarkably accomplished musician. A chorister from childhood, scholarship recipient, organist, violinist, harpsichordist, jazz pianist and composer, his musical gifts were every bit as extraordinary as his comedic talents.
This composition seeks to capture the many dimensions of Moore's personality. Humorous yet vulnerable. Brilliant yet deeply human. Irreverent yet thoughtful. Through lyrical melodies, expressive harmonies and contrasting musical episodes, the piece paints a musical portrait of an artist who brought laughter and creativity to millions while navigating life's challenges with courage and resilience.
Rather than presenting a formal memorial, Dudley celebrates the warmth and familiarity of the man himself. As Justin describes, Dudley was "your neighbour who just happened to live a long way away." That spirit of affection and connection flows throughout the music.
Ideal for recitals, examinations and reflective performance settings, Dudley offers pianists an engaging contemporary work that balances musical expression, character and storytelling.
A Note from Justin
Genius comes in all shapes and sizes and is often misunderstood.
Rachmaninoff was six foot six. Kermit the Frog was felt. Jim Henson and Dudley Moore had club feet. Dudley was teased a lot and was five foot two. It didn't stop his love of laughter.
The Cook and Moore Partnership (and later Derek and Clive) was pure comic genius. One of the funniest double acts in comedy history.
Moore was born in the same year as my mother and was alive for the last eight years of Rachmaninoff's life, whom he adored.
Chorister at six.
Music scholarship at eleven.
Harpsichordist.
Organist.
Violinist.
Oxford Music Scholar.
Accomplished jazz pianist and composer.
Comedian and satirist.
Film and television star.
But most importantly, Dudley was your neighbour who just happened to live a long way away.
Funny, irreverent, electric and vulnerable.
Broad-minded, eccentric, brilliant and flawed also.
This is my tribute to him.
