A Note from Justin
Since I was a kid, I've been fascinated by wildlife - especially birds. My first interest was Australia's native species, but before long I started exploring birds from around the world.
 
The Bearded Vulture certainly looks the part. With its impressive beard and wingspan of around 7–9 feet (roughly the length of my two favourite pianos: the concert grand and the "almost concert grand" that clearly didn't eat enough vegetables growing up), it's an extraordinary bird.
 
Its call immediately caught my attention. I found myself captivated by the series of notes and wanted to see whether I could capture some of that sound at the piano. Their calls vary, of course - particularly when their mobile phone battery runs flat.
 
The title Bearded Vulture Trine refers to the species' occasionally unconventional family arrangements. While most Bearded Vultures form monogamous breeding pairs, cases of polyandry have been observed. Which probably explains why they don't do especially well on dating apps and often have to write, "It's complicated."
 
This composition explores the spaces between the bird's beautiful calls. In teaching, we often encourage students to imagine sounds from nature rather than relying only on mechanical explanations of phrasing. The left hand provides movement and stability beneath the nesting call of the melody, while increasingly colourful textures emerge as the work unfolds.
