About this Arrangement:
There are six Cello Suites by Johann Sebastian Bach, written for unaccompanied cello and now among the most frequently performed works in the cello repertoire. Thanks largely to the early 20th-century recordings of Pablo Casals, these suites have secured their place as staples of the classical canon.
The suites have since been transcribed for many instruments. This arrangement focuses on the Prelude from the First Suite - perhaps the most recognisable of them all - reimagined for minimalist piano in a purely supportive role to the cello soloist.
Accompanying roles in classical concerts can sometimes feel like being a cop on a stakeout: long stretches of waiting, briefly enlivened by the promise of a doughnut - ideally with thick pink icing and a few sprinkles. This arrangement aims to give the pianist something more meaningful: a role that supports, breathes, and listens, without slipping into a nap that disrupts one’s optimal circadian rhythm.
