About this Recording
A Perfection That Doesn’t Exist is an original contemporary instrumental by Australian composer Justin James for piano and string ensemble.
Built around recurring piano movement and evolving string textures, the work moves through melancholy, warmth and tension while exploring the gap between the life we imagine and the reality that eventually reveals itself.
Originally written in 2001, the musical idea first appeared in a comical audio satire about Photoshopped images. It was later transformed into this piano and strings arrangement for Algorithm Hitz – Episode 5.
The result is a visual and programmatic piece that combines reflective contemporary classical writing with a cinematic sense of movement and emotional development.
A Note from Justin
Written in 2001, A Perfection That Doesn’t Exist was a musical idea that went into a comical audio satire about Photoshopped images. The piece then underwent a transition for Algorithm Hitz Episode 5, to an ensemble piece for piano and strings.
The piece is about the youthful desire to build a life like paint by numbers. By believing in the image, before it shows you what is really there. The desire and often misplaced direction of youthful exuberance.
My eyes tell me what is perfect, but does my heart follow to fit? Or is the beauty in life about the perfection that comes from not trying to paint by numbers?
